In The Beginning

This is a little about me and the reasons why I started this blog:
My love affair with perfume started when I was a child. I would always beg the SAs of the stores my mother visited for samples, which I collected with a passion. On one of those trips, when I was around eight years old, I finally asked my mother for my very own full bottle. She could not comprehend what a child would do with one, yet she eventually agreed. I picked Anais Anais by Cacharel. My sample collection kept growing and it even graduated to a collection of miniatures which I love to this day. Again as a child, there was a time when I could always name the perfume of anyone that came near me, I guess that was in the 80s, when there were only about 800 perfumes in the world, instead of thousands of new releases per year... When thinking of what I wanted to do when I grew up, all I wanted was to create perfumes. Disappointment hit me though as I became more and more convinced that this would be an impossible path for me. Because of this I found different interests and chose a different path..but my passion for perfume never waned. I am not an expert and there are so many other blogs out there that do a most excellent job. But I really wanted my own little space to share my love for fragrances and my thoughts with other perfume-lovers. Olfaction is of utmost importance to me.. I consider it my strongest sense. A scent can bring to the surface memories not just as pictures, but as complete emotions, that cradle the heart and lift it with joy, or drown it in sorrow. They can evoke the light touch of a lover past, or the caress of the summer sun. Everything and anything can be contained in smells. For me, the stimulus does not even need be there. It is enough to imagine a smell I have experienced to actually smell it once again as if it was truly there.

May I ask you why?

Hey Velviona,

Well.. A lot of things conspired to disappoint me, but mainly, I hate to admit it, was the connection between chemistry and fragrance. I always wanted to follow an academic path and I knew that in order to combine that with perfumery I had to delve into chemistry, for perfume is not only art and inspiration, but also science. As a 13 year old girl (that is when I finally made the decision to try to choose a different path than the one my heart wanted) I did not believe in my abilities in chemistry. Ironically enough, life has led me back to the door of chemistry and now I find myself studying it more and more as I try to understand the biology and workings of the brain for my study. Life is funny that way :) I wish I had as much faith in my abilities then as I do now, but I am fortunate enough to love the path I have chosen equally. Welcome to my blog by the way!

I also wanted to add that in the same way some of my favorite paintings are made by artists who never attended art school, some of my favorite perfumes are made by people who did not follow a formal perfumery training. This is also knowledge I did not have back then...

You've taken the words right out of my mouth....
I was just like you! I would go repeatedly to department stores begging for samples to bring home to mom -big lie! They were all for my collection. I too was a child of the 80's and was most proud to name any scent that came ny nose's way. I'll never forget dabbing on some Obsession in the middle of French class...and then to have my teacher proclaim.."what is that amazing scent!!" She loved it...
Alas, in hind sight...I wished I'd pursued chemistry -I was quite good at it too...no doubt it would have been an asset for a career in perfumery...if only I had the foresight.**sigh**
Many hobbies have come and gone...perfume is the only one that's endured.

Hello! So nice of you to share your own similar experiences. I really enjoyed reading about it. I am sorry you have regret, but you know, it is never, ever too late for anything, I trully believe that. Do you plan on pursuing your passion for fragrance professionally somehow? I'd love to hear more if you feel like sharing, do keep in contact. And you know, people with passion, they can channel this wonderfully positive energy into so many things. I am sure you'll shine brightly in whatever path you have chosen! My warmest greetings to you and welcome to my blog!

Wow!

I wrote earlier that I was going to have to spend hours looking at your archives- I had looked while was at work, and of course they have that annoying propensity to ask me to work there. So I read a few reviews.

Now I get home and find that you started this tax day of this year?!?

Well, welcome to the world of perfume bloggers- you are certainly going to be a daily stop for me (and I expect you to write about everything released in the past year :-} ). Your writing is wonderfully evocative, and if English is a second language to you, a reader would never know.

Keep writing!
